Coronary Artery Bypass Graft
What is CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft)?
Coronary artery bypass surgery is a surgical procedure to restore normal blood flow to an obstructed coronary artery. A normal coronary artery transports blood to and from the heart muscle itself. New grafts (either arterial or great saphenous vein) are used to bypass the blocked segment of the artery. CABG is performed to relieve angina unsatisfactorily controlled by maximum tolerated medication, prevent or relieve left heart dysfunction, and/or reduce the risk of death. After the surgery, the patient is monitored in the ICU for 3-4 days, then shifted to our post-operative ward where the stay is for about 4-5 days and then discharged.
